Common Toad
(Bufo bufo)
Description

Common toad

Generally brownish with raised bumps and spots, the Common Toad is a slow mover which tends to creep about our gardens on wet summer nights, hunting worms and other invertebrates.

Sometimes it is so busy watching its prey that it misses catching it all together. It has short stubby back legs and its feet are not webbed.

The adult female is larger than the male, and is about 10cm long.

It has a raised parotid gland behind its eyes which manufactures the defensive foul-tasting fluid which oozes from its skin if it is captured by a predator.
