Palmate Newt
(Triturus helveticus)

Description

Slightly smaller (length: 7.5cm) than the Common Newt, the Palmate Newt looks at first glance similar and the females of both species are difficult to distinguish, although female Palmates tend to have a pinkish belly and throat, and no chin spots.

Males develop black webs on their hind feet (like gum boots) and a thin filament which extends from the tip of their tails in the breeding season. Their courtship ritual is delicate. Feeds on invertebrates.
