Description

Common Newt



A colourful and attractive species - the male develops bright orange and blue on his tail and a ribbed crest with frilled webbing round his toes in the breeding season. Males have strong black belly spots. Females are brown with pale spotting. Length: 8cm.

The most commonly occurring lowland newt, its skin is slightly slimy in water but once it leaves its breeding ponds to forage for invertebrates on land, its skin changes and becomes soft and velvety to the touch.


Status
Reserve Found in several of the ponds, and in the main lake system.
Britain Widespread throughout, though scarcer in mountain areas.
World Occurs throughout northern Europe.
