Scales The skin of a bird has special cells which are able to produce a substance called "keratin". Human skin also makes keratin, which is used for hair and nail growth. In birds, the keratin usually grows into feathers, but sometimes it grows into scales, like those on a lizard. These little scales usually grow on birds' legs and feet, but can sometimes be found in other places, such as around the bird's eyes.
