There are more than 20 000 fish species in the world. Fish are animals that live underwater in deep oceans, ponds, rivers and lakes. Most fish either live in fresh or saltwater. Salmon and eels are an exception and are able to live in both freshwater and saltwater habitats.

Fish have streamlined bodies, scales and fins to help them swim through water. Fish are able to breathe underwater by using their gills. There are two main groups of fish; bony and cartilaginous. Many fish use colour as camouflage to help them survive. Fish can change their colour or shape, so they can blend in with their surroundings and hide from predators such as sharks!
