Larvae on a variety of low-growing plants. The hairy larvae are often a common sight crawling rapidly over the ground. They have been given the nickname 'Woolly Bears'.

Distributed over most of Europe, except Sicily, and the southern Balkan Peninsula. Range
extends through Asia to Russia, Korea and Japan.
