Some mammals such as flying
squirrels are able to glide long distances, but bats are the only mammals
that can really fly.
The shape of the wing varies
in different species, and that shape gives clues about the way that particular
bat flies. Long narrow wings, like those of the noctule, are designed
for fast direct flight. This bat can fly long distances using less energy
than bats with broader wings.
Short broad wings are designed
for slower flight. They enable the bat to manoeuvre well, but as they
use more energy, it will make short flights. The broad wings of the long-eared
bat even enable it to hover as it takes insects from leaves.
