Bank vole
(Clethrionomys glareolus)
Description Rounder face than mice, small eyes and ears, medium length tail with dark upper and light underside. Fur reddish brown with a cream underbelly. Head and body length 81-123mm, weights 14.5-36g.
Life cycle Mainly diurnal, with a maximum lifespan of 18 months. Breeding season from April to October, gestation 16-18 days, 3-5 offspring in a litter that are weaned at 14 days. 4-5 litters a year.
Habitat Deciduous woodland, hedges, conifer plantations, prefers dense ground cover.
Diet Fruits, seeds and leaves plus insects and worms.

1998 census showed breeding populations in all parts of the reserve.
