Weasel
(Mustela nivalis)
Description This small carnivore has a long slim reddish brown body, short tail and cream belly. Typical male head and body length is between 194-217mm with a weight between 106-131g, females are between 173-183mm and weigh 55-69g.
Life cycle Most weasels do not live beyond 2 years. Usually one litter of 4-6 young is born per season, which are weaned at 4-6 weeks.
Habitat Varied habitats are used, usually having several fur lined nests in old mouse or vole tunnels within one territory.
Diet They are small enough to hunt their main prey of mice or voles in tunnels, they also take birds, eggs and small rabbits.


Status
Reserve Breeding populations are believed to resident.
Britain Pre-breeding population estimated at 450,000, believed to be declining for the same reasons as stoats, i.e. declining prey and secondary poisoning.
