Grey squirrel

Description Grey fur with some red, bushy tail. Head and body length 245-300mm, weights 340-750g.
Life cycle Diurnal. Maximum life span 8-9 years, average 1 year. Gestation 42-45 days, average litter of 8 young independent at 10-16 weeks. Sexually mature at 10-12 months.
Habitat Deciduous and mixed woodland, hedgerows, parks and gardens. Build a nest 30-60cm in diameter called a dray. Nests are in trees and made of twigs lined with leaves and grass.
Diet Tree seeds, fruits, roots and bark.


Status
Reserve Sometimes seen in wooded parts of the reserve.
Britain Pre-breeding population estimated at 2,520,000, increasing in both range and abundance.
