Pygmy shrew
(Sorex minutus)
Description Britain's smallest mammal is dark brown on the back and sides with a whitish underside. It has a long snout. Its head is more domed than the common shrew and its tail is thicker. The Pygmy Shrew's head and body length is 40 - 60 mm and it weighs only 2.4 - 6.1g. Life cycle Males live separately from females, the breeding season being from April to October. They are active over a 24 hour cycle and eat 125% of their own body weight in food per 24 hours. Habitat Dense cover in deciduous woodland, hedgerows, scrubland and grassland. Diet Insects, spiders and woodlice.
