Gymnosperms |
gymnosperms |
|
| (sounds
like "Jim-no-sperms") This group includes big conifer trees, for example Scots Pine and Fir trees. Most of the plants in this group are evergreen, that is to say, their leaves do not fall off with the changing seasons. Their leaves can last 3 to 4 years and often needle-like or scale-like with waxy skin to help the tree to save water. |

They do produce flowers, but unlike the true Flowering Plants, the flowers of gymnosperms are quite simple, and are "unisexual", which means they only have male or female parts, never both. These plants reproduce by pollen and seed. However, the ovule from which the seed develops is naked, that is to say it is not enclosed in an ovary (unlike flowering plants). The flowers and seeds are often found in a woody cone, and the cones are either male or female.
