Willowherbs are colourful herbs including the popular pink Fuchsia, Evening Primrose and many types of Willowherb.

Willowherbs are perennial.

This is a tall herb, reaching 2.5 metres. The flowers are a deep pink colour.

It is common, and is often regarded as a weed, because it successfully springs up in all sorts of places, including people's gardens.

It is also known as "Fireweed", because it often grows where there has been a fire. It was seen in great numbers, growing in London after second world war bombings.

Habitat

A wide range of habitats including rocky habitats, woodland edges, waste places and riverbanks.

Can grow in many soil types.

 

Special features

The flowers are different shapes and sizes.

 

Reproduction

Often flower in the first year.

The flowers are pollinated by insects.

A long slender fruit develops, which eventually splits along its length, to expose many fluffy seeds. The seeds are are blown away in the wind.

Flowers from June to September.

Geographical

Widespread throughout Britain, but not so frequent in the north.

Fun Fact

In Sweden, this plant is called "Himmelgraes", which means "Herb of Heaven".
