Slow-worm
(Anguis fragilis)Description
A secretive, burrowing legless lizard which spends most of its life underground, coming to the surface occasionally to bask under sunny stones or logs (refuges) or deep in the grass where it cannot be seen by predators. Its skin is covered in small, smooth overlapping scales which make it look shiny. It feeds on slugs, small worms and snails.Males are usually grey with a bluish belly; females are brown/copper with a black belly, sides and a black dorsal stripe. Length: up to 50cm.
It is the longest-lived British reptile - surviving up to 35 years in the wild and up to 54 years in captivity.
