Smooth Snake
(Coronella austriaca)
Description

A rare and endangered snake, confined to a few lowland dry heaths in southern Britain. Grey in colour with brown spots and butterfly pattern on head (length: up to 70cm). Both sexes similar in appearance.

Constricts prey (small rodents and other reptiles) and gives birth to live young in late summer.

Britain A few lowland dry heaths in southern England - Dorset, Hampshire and Surrey only.
World Two sub-species (northern and southern) occur over most of Europe.
