Sand Lizard
(Lacerta agilis)Description A rare and endangered lizard, confined to lowland dry sandy heaths. Sand Lizards live in colonies, lay eggs and feed on insects.
Larger and stockier than the Common Lizard, the Sand Lizard grows up to 20cm long with distinctive dorsal spots. Females are brown but males may be bright green during the breeding season. Very fast.
StatusReserve Does not occur here. Britain Now restricted to lowland dry heaths in southern England and Merseyside. However, was recorded at certain locations along the Kent coast in the first half of this century. World Occurs throughout western Europe.
