Common/Viviparous Lizard
(Lacerta vivipara)Description
Small, fast moving brown lizard, common and widespread on rough grassland, woodland edges, railway embankments and other open, sunny slopes where it hunts insects, especially spiders. Both males and females have broad dorsal stripes of different browns - the male is more highly spotted. A male's belly is generally orange with black spots and a female's is pale yellow with few spots. Length: up to 18cm.
Its Latin name refers to its young, which are born live, rather than hatched from an egg.
StatusReserve Common on all south-facing sunny banks around the Sunrise Trail.
