Day 2 "How environmentally friendly are you?"
Rationale and Curriculum links
Home
This work will continue Day 1's theme of waste and address why we need to conserve water/energy.

Children will demonstrate their understanding of environmental awareness by stating actions which would harm or help the environment. Links will be made to respective Geography units of study: waste matters for Years 3 & 4 and water concerns for Years 5 & 6.

Pupils will be encouraged to develop their ideas around a board game. The format lends itself to many more curricular links, such as:

· Instructional or procedural texts for Literacy
· Practical application of knowledge of shape in Numeracy e.g. making a die or spinner
· Social and co-operative skills in planning, making and playing the game
· Design and Technology skills and processes, in making a prototype and evaluating it.

In the afternoon the children will be involved in a second 'low impact lunch' activity. They will aim to produce less waste generally, with a greater portion being reusable or recyclable waste. Children take home a letter beforehand, informing parents of the objective so that hopefully there will be a difference. Follow-up work will involve some basic data handling, studying before/after figures and comparing different classes. Once all classes have completed the activity twice, the data will be entered into a data handling program so that more detailed analysis can be carried out and presented in a variety of ways.
