At Broad Oak Nature Reserve we try to have as little impact on our planet as possible. We want to encourage all our visitors to 'live lightly'. This includes reusing and recycling our rubbish.

All visitors can help us gain our Eco-Centres award by bringing a 'waste free lunch'. If you are visiting the Centre with your class perhaps you can talk about creating a waste free lunch.

recycling bins
The Recycling Centre!

We encourage visitors to bring a lunch with minimum throw-away packaging. For example; bring lunch boxes or bags that can be reused, use foil (which can be recycled) instead of clingfilm or use a flask or a reusable bottle instead of throwaway drinks containers.

Any waste that cannot be reused will be sorted for recycling.
Children sort the waste into separate bins:
Compost (e.g. fruit and vegetable waste) Placed in the compost bins and wormery.
Bread and biscuit leftovers Fed to the birds on the bird table.
Plastic Recycled through the Canterbury collection scheme.
Metal (e.g. aluminium foil) Recycled through the Canterbury collection scheme.
Paper and cardboard Recycled through the Canterbury collection scheme.
Rubbish Taken to the landfill site. (Hopefully this will be as little as possible.)

Once all the sorting has taken place, we weigh the amount of rubbish that will be going to landfill. We keep a record of how much rubbish is created, so that we can identify which schools have been successful. (We calculate the weight of rubbish per student so that we can compare schools fairly.) See the results on the "Waste free lunch" challenge page!
