Vole

Several types of vole are found in Britain. The bank vole is common and is found in hedgerows and woodland. The water vole is becoming rare because their riverside habitat is being disturbed and because people sometimes kill them thinking they are 'water rats'. They are harmless, eating plant roots and seeds and living in holes along the river bank.
