It was a newt. Newts lay their eggs hidden on leaves so other animals can't find them.

Newts are a type of amphibian like frogs. They spend part of their life in water and part of their life on land. Newts lay their eggs one by one in water and stick them to water plants. They may lay hundreds like this! The eggs hatch after a few weeks and the newtpoles (like tadpoles) have gills to breathe in the water.
