After reading "Pond Web" a few times during previous shared reading sessions, we decided to concentrate on identifying punctuation. We were used to putting actions in to help us remember what different types of punctuation meant through our work on "Sebastian's Waddle". The children were familiar with nodding at full stops and nodding and smiling at exclamation marks! We identified question marks and commas in "Pond Web". After talking about where you would find a question mark we decided to try and raise our voices and our eyebrows just as if asking a question. We talked about commas being a shorter pause than a full stop and decided that a blink would be a good action. We then enjoyed reading through the story putting in our new actions. For our word level work session we looked at a section of the text without the punctuation from the story "Pond Web" which had been copied and pasted into Talking First Word. We listened to the computer read the section and discussed what was missing and how that made the text sound. The children then took it in turns to come up to the computer and add the appropriate punctuation. We then read through the text ourselves and put in all of our new actions. During the following guided reading session we focussed on identifying different types of punctuation putting in our actions. Other children working independently used the missing punctuation sheet printed out from this site. One of the groups, replacing the missing punctuation, shared their work during the plenary session.
