During our shared reading time we read through "Pond Web" on the computer. We talked about key words and their importance for conveying meaning in the text. I wrote out a sentence from "Pond Web" with each word on a separate card, we then tried taking away different word cards to see if the sentence would still make sense. We tried to think of ways to classify key words for example: always a noun, a longer word. We used the key words that we identified as a starting point to make simple notes from the text. I scribed the notes for the children on a white board, using a different colour and underlining the key word. As part of our word level work we brainstormed question words for example: what, when, where, who as a class group. We thought about sentence building with the question word at the beginning of the sentence and finishing with a question mark, reinforcing the formation of a question mark by practising on the white board and sky writing. The children devised questions orally and shared them with the group, for example; Who did the Heron eat? Where does the fish live?. As a guided writing activity the children were asked to write an animal fact file based upon the animals in "Pond Web". I copied and pasted the picture and definition from the book and printed it out so that the children had information to base their questions on. They then used flash cards with question words as a starting point for their sentences and recorded their ideas on the laptop using Talking First Word. The children copied and pasted a picture of their animal using the big book pictures into their work. The rest of the group completed the same activity on paper with a picture copied and printed for them to write on. Click here to find flash cards. Children shared the fact files that they created during the plenary session. The reports were then used to create a class book. Rebecca Stoneham (South Deal County Primary School). |
