During our shared reading time we read through "Pond Web". We highlighted the synonyms using the big book text enlarged to A3 as we read through the book on the computer screen. We then covered the synonyms with post-it notes and thought of alternative synonyms to fit with the story for example: twist and twirl. As a class group we brainstormed groups of synonyms recording them to be used as a class display or word bank during the word level work. The children took it in turns to sound out and record their ideas on the white board. During the independent work groups were asked to look through fiction and non fiction texts to identify synonyms. These were recorded on a large sheet of card with one child in the group acting as a scribe. When the group was supported by an adult a simple thesaurus was introduced as a way of finding groups of words with the same meaning. The children used Talking First Word to type in words and use the thesaurus in the program to search for synonyms. The children recorded the words and changed the font colour for each group of synonyms and then printed their work. As an extension activity the children worked in groups of two or four turning the playing card with and matching them to the correct word on the playing board. The playing board and cards were backed on card and laminated. Click here to find the synonym game. Children shared the word banks that they created during the plenary session.
