Context: Children had been exploring and identifying different colours, shades and patterns. They had listened to the story of "Elmer" by David Mckee and discussed what it means if something is patchwork.
Learning Intentions:To choose particular colours for a purpose. (CD)
To use the fill tool in a simple paint program. (KUW)
Child Speak Targets: I am learning to /can use the fill tool to create a multicoloured Elmer.

You will need: "Elmer" andElmer Template (right click on this link and save on your computer. Once saved open in the paint program.)

Introduce the Elmer Template in a simple paint program. Encourage children to discuss whether this elephant looks like Elmer.

Demonstrate use of the fill tool to fill the shapes on Elmer. Introduce the word paint palette and show children how to select different colours. Show children how to use the undo icon if available.

Encourage children to work in pairs or small groups to create a patchwork Elmer.

Ask children to print their work when they have completed it for a display.

Some children may like the challenge of creating a patterned Elmer.

Remind children that all the other elephants in the Elmer story decorate themselves on Elmer's Day. Show children the pictures from the book and discuss how they have been decorated.

Ask children to explore ways to decorate an elephant, using the different tools in the paint program.
