You will need: A simple paint program.

Introduce children to the paint program, talk about how they can use tools to create pictures.

Model how to choose the flood fill tool to change the colour of the screen, do this several times using different colours from the palette.

Once a black/dark blue night time sky has been created show children how to use the spray can to create an effect. Use a selection of colours and discuss whether the effect is better with a lighter or darker colour.

Children work in pairs to create a firework picture. Talk about bonfire night and look at pictures of fireworks.

Ask children to use flood fill and spray can tools to create a firework picture. Encourage children to click the mouse and hold to produce different effects e.g. short bursts for rockets, spiral shapes for Catherine wheels...

Children to create their own fireworks pictures. Ask them to use a selection of colours and vary their mouse clicks.

Thinking Questions: Which tools have you used to make your picture?
What different colours have you used?
How did you decide which colours to use?
How could you make your fireworks picture better?
What sounds do you think your fireworks would make?

Plenary/Recall: Look at pictures created, revise tools used and consider what they might do differently next time.up
