Swans are large white birds that live on lakes, rivers and canals in Britain. Male swans are called cobs and female swans are called pens. They have webbed feet to help them swim. Swans eat water plants by putting their beaks under the water. They also eat small animals like frogs and worms. |

| Male swans weigh up to 11kg and female swans weigh up to 9kg. | ||
Female swans lay their eggs in April in nests near the water. They build their nests on the ground from grass and water plants like reeds and bull rushes. |

Eggs. Female swans lay between 5 and 8 brown eggs. A group of eggs is called a clutch. The swans keep the eggs warm for 5 weeks until they hatch. |

| Baby swans are called cygnets. They have soft grey feathers and grey beaks. As their wings get bigger the cygnets learn to fly. | ||
| It takes the cygnets 14 weeks to learn to fly. | ||
