Introduce the big book. Discuss differences between a real book and a computer book. Identify the title, author and possible characters. Discuss how to move from page to page. Read book together. Discuss questions marks and possible answers but do not look at answers yet.

Look at each page and ask children to identify key words linked to the topic of swans. Write up and discuss as class word bank, (with pictures where necessary), to be used throughout the week.

A - Guided writing.
Re-write Swan Story in own words using class topic word bank. Use pictures (see Literacy Links) to aid sequencing.
|
B - Handwriting Practice as holding activity, followed by guided reading.
Either use smaller copies of the swan story or reading scheme material.
|
C- Definitions. Give children list of underlined words in Swan Story text. Ask children to find the definitions using dictionaries, CD-ROMS and reference books.
|
D- Comprehension. Print out Sebastian's Quiz, encourage children to write answers in proper sentences.
|
E - Punctuation. Provide children with a piece of text with punctuation removed. Ask children to rewrite inserting correct punctuation.(e.g page 6 of Swan Story.)

Group A - Read their version of Swan Story.

Re-read big book and go through answers. Discuss beginning and endings of sentences. Focusing on forms of punctuation such as question marks and exclamation marks. Show examples in other texts. If time discuss appropriate expression associated with different forms of punctuation.

Focus on page 6, print out and enlarge text, deleting the punctuation. Teacher to read through lacking expression and awareness of punctuation. Ask children to help you make sense of the text by inserting appropriate punctuation. Discuss need for exclamation and question marks in all texts. Read through page with appropriate expression.

Definitions - Each child in group read one definition.

Introduce the author of the book "Sebastian Swan." Look on Sebastian's page and read letter together. Discuss E-mail as a form of communication through computers linked to the internet. Discuss and model answer to the letter on board.

Print out and enlarge big book text (see Literacy Links) used for cloze procedure. Encouraging children to predict from the text and to read on leaving a gap and re-read.

Read "Swan Fact Sheet" (print out and enlarge on photocopier.)Discuss key structural features e.g. headings, sequential steps and direct language.

Introduce the presence tense using the word ending "ing". Identify "ing" words in the text, encourage the children to put these words into other sentences ensuring that these are in the present tense.
