This ancient wood is owned and
managed by Forest Enterprise. In the 1950's much of the semi-natural coppice
woodland was replaced with conifers. Clowes Wood is one of the best places to
hear the remarkable song of the nightjar. The best time of year to hear this
is on summer evenings in May and June. Later, in July, Clowes Wood is one of
the best places to see glow worms.
The facilities include a car park and a series of walks
and cycle routes. The car park is located off the road linking Canterbury and
Chestfield near Whitstable. The old Canterbury Whitstable railway line passes
through the west of the wood. It has now been built in and now forms an attractive
pathway.
