Find Reculver Towers on this aerial photograph. The land between Reculver and Birchington, the first town you can see in the distance, is very flat.

The land is a patchwork of fields divided by drainage dykes, or drains. Amongst these dykes, twisting across the flat land, is the narrow river Wantsum. The whole area is protected from high seas by a sea wall and rock groynes.
