Roman Bricks
Evidence of the Roman fort, called Regulbium by the Romans, may be seen
in the red bricks or tiles used in
the walls of the church. Today you can walk around the outside of the
remaining wall of the Roman fort, but what you see is only the core or
inside of its lower part. Most of the squared blocks used as facing
stones were robbed long ago.
This mosaic shows a section of the medieval church wall. The builders of
that early church used stones and Roman tiles from the ruined fort
buildings.
