Heron

Yes

I am a bird with large wings and can fly long distances. My legs are long and slender for standing in the water and my beak is long, too, for spearing fish, frogs and shell fish. I am brilliant at keeping still - much better than you !! The stiller I keep, the better chance I have of catching my dinner.

Pond Skater

No

I love skimming and hopping about all over the water surface and can do this because my long beautiful legs spread my weight so I just glide on the water tension. I breathe through my skin. My tummy is hairy which helps me float, and is really useful as I can sense vibrations when my dinner is nearby! I dart out to insects that have fallen in the water and eat them with my piercing mouth. Got you!! Yum yum!!

Leech

No

I move in a special way. It's like swimming, but with a wriggling, looping motion, made by using my suckers at both ends of my body. You might think I'm from a horror story, because for dinner I suck the blood of fish, frogs and water snails ....s..s..scrumptious!!

Water Vole

Yes

I have four feet and scurry about at the side of a pond. I am a mammal so I breathe air, but I am clever at holding my breath, so I can swim under water for a while. My favourite place is mud - ah, lovely mud, so I live in a burrow in the mud bank. What do you think I eat? Do some research to find out if your ideas are correct. I am quite cute - don't you think?

Frog

Yes

I am an amphibian, so I live around the edge of the pond, jumping in and out of it. I lay my eggs (frogspawn) in the water and they hatch into tadpoles, which breathe through gills. They grow into frogs and breathe through their lungs (clever, eh? ). As a frog, I get my dinner from the surrounding land, and I just love slugs. I hate being cold, so in the winter I hibernate in the pond mud. See you next year …zzzzzzz

Habitat Conditions

  • Oxygen. The air is full of oxygen which is produced by all the plants and trees surrounding the pond.
  • Light. There is plenty of light although some areas may be shaded by reeds and overhanging trees.
  • Shelter. There is plenty of shelter from plants, shrubs and trees.
  • Food. Lots of food can be found here as there are many insects and small animals living in the reed area, and also on and just below the surface of the water.
  • Predators. The main predators are birds, mammals and larger insects.
