Sign warning of flooding in the car park
  • Car park
The supermarket car park is built on the flood plain, and is often flooded when the river reaches high levels.

  • Access steps
There is also evidence of human interference here, with the access steps into the river bank, to aid the launching canoes for a nearby riverside youth centre. This area also attracts vandalism and alcohol drinkers, possibly due to this area being just outside the public view.

Vegetation on the banks of the river
  • River banks
The river banks at some points are more 'natural' than through Westgate Gardens and Westgate. The gradual sides covered in water side vegetation, are good for wildlife, but less efficient when compared to vertical river banks upstream. This slows the water down and makes the river more prone to flooding. Note the matting laid down to stabalise the river bank.

Shallow sided banks

Kingsmeade Island which is mainly open land
  • Landuse
Landuse on Kingsmead Island is mainly open space, and the Kingsmeade sports centre. However, it has been earmarked as a major development for restaurants, cinema and car parking and other tourist services. This is obviously extremely valuable land, although many people question the risk of flooding.
Small holes in the bank made by small mammals
  • Holes in the bank
Due to the vegetation and soil along the river banks wildlife such as birds and small mammals benefit. This photo shows some holes in the bank that have been dug by sandmartins.
