Water Cycle Glossary
Word
Meaning

Altitude

Height, measured from sea level.

Bedrock

Solid rock underneath the layer of soil.

Channel (river)

The low area between the river banks in which water flows.

Condensation

Process by which gas passes into the liquid or solid state, by cooling.

Deposition

The laying of material onto the river bed that has been transpoted by the river.

Evaporation

Process by which a liquid passes into a gas.

Erosion

The slow removal of particles of a substance by another substance, e.g. rivers slowly taking bits of rock and soil from the banks.

Floodplain

The flat floor of a valley over which a river may spread in the time of flood.

Friction

A force when two or more objects or surfaces rub together, resulting in a loss of energy (e.g. slowing down or releasing heat).

Gas

A light floating substance, similar to air.

Ground water

Water held underground in rock formations.

Impermeable surface

A surface which does not allow the passage of water through it.

Infiltration

The process of water slowly moving into, or through, a surface (e.g. by filling the small gaps between soil particles)

Lake

A water filled hollow in the ground, usually quite large.

Leaf drip

Rain water dripping of leaves on trees

Liquid

A runny substance similar to water.

Meander

A curved, loop-like bend in a river.

Mouth (of river)

The outfall of a river into the sea or large lake

Particles

Very small pieces of a substance

Pollution

When a harmfull substance is placed into another, e.g. oil into the sea.

Precipitation

The falling of water to the earths surface from the atmosphere, can be rain, dew, mist etc.

Rainfall

When droplets of water, formed by condensation, fall to earth.

Reservoir

An area of water storage, often a man made lake.

River

Water flowing in a channel towards the sea or a large lake.

Sediment

Material laid down by rivers on flood plains and its own bed.

Solid

A hard substance similar to wood and rock.

Source

The point where a river rises, e.g. at a spring

State

Liquid, solid and gas are 'states' of a substance. A substance can move between these states with the use of heat (energy).

Storm drains

Man made channels and pipes which direct rainwater from built up areas to rivers, lakes and the sea, to avoid flooding.

Stream

A small river, often tributaries to rivers.

Surface runoff

The flowing of water on the surface of the ground, down a slope.

Suspension

When a substance is held up and kept from falling or sinking in air or water, e.g. mud (silt) in a river, or clouds in the air.

Transportation

The movement of material by being 'carried' by the river.

Tributary

A stream or river which joins a larger one.

Trunk flow

Rain water flowing down tree trunks

Velocity

Speed

Water Cycle

The movement of water from the sea, into the air, on to land and back out to sea again.

Water table

Level below ground which is saturated with water.

Water vapour

The gas state of water.
