West Boldon Environmental Education Centre is open all year round for full and half day visits. Our busiest time of year is the summer term, and our most popular programmes include:

Minibeasts
Habitat
Ponds
Plants
Trees
Food chains & webs

Woodland dayTeachers are welcome to mix and match topics to suit their needs, or request activities tailor made to their objectives. All topics are designed to suit the requirements of the national Curriculum and are primarily outdoor practical activities. These programmes are available at all times of the year. In addition, we offer theme weeks at certain times of year:

Autumn Programme - A selection of games and activities to teach about migration, hibernation, and the changing season (full or half day session).
Christmas Arts & Crafts - A chance to combine an indoor craft session using natural/recycled materials and an outdoor seasonal activity, concluding with a Christmas quiz (half day session).
Electricity Programme - The focus is on safety in the home and around substations. This is aimed at KS2 pupils. Other aspects of electricity education can be taught on request (full or half day session).
Scarlet King Snake
Creepy Crawlies - Guest speaker Michael Mann brings a wild array of live tropical insects, reptiles, amphibians and arachnids offering a chance to learn about their lifecycles, habitats and feeding habits. The children get a rare opportunity to see these creatures close up and handle some of the more friendly specimens (half day session).
Easter Arts & Crafts - An indoor art/craft session combined with a seasonal outdoor activity, including an Ester egg hunt (half day session).

Environmental Information Service (EIS) - The EIS provides teachers and other interested parties with quality information on any aspect of the environment - from nature & wildlife to global warming & recycling. Information can be sent out in any requested format such as worksheets, activity ideas or background reading. To use this service, teachers or other interested parties can simply contact the Centre by telephone, fax, post or email. We will endeavour to get the information out to them within 7 working days. We have also researched into teaching packs and educational resources produced by companies and other organisations such as the RSPB and Shell, and can offer information on what is available. Finally, the centre has good environmental contacts across the north east and we will be the first port of call for teachers to locate help and expertise on environmental projects in school such as waste management or school grounds.
