Earthworm

Gardeners welcome earthworms in their gardens. They eat the soil and use the dead plant material from it as food. They leave behind worm casts which you may see on the surface of the ground.

The lump which you can see partway along the worm is called the saddle. This is where the worms eggs are produced. The tunnels which the worms leave behind allow air to get into the soil.
